Google Wave

om

Just a quick note to say that, having been mildly underwhelmed by Google Chrome, I’m now quite excited to see Google Wave later this year.

Google Wave is, essentially, a collaborative discussion and working tool, allowing you to email, chat, share and edit documents in real-time. This is something that I’ve needed from time-to-time.

I’ll be signing myself up for an early copy later this year when it comes out. In the meantime, if you’re hyper-patient, and can stand the slightly smug tone, and can tolerate a room full of developers messing their pants, feel free to have a look at the 1.20 hour video here. You can also see the (too) short version here.

Is just me, or are a lot of big-company PR / launches like this taking on a slightly Jobsian, hyperbolic style? I don’t have the answers. I just wanted to write ‘hyperbolic’ in a blog.

Google seem to gloss over the fact that an element of Wave requires Google Gears. Say what? I mean, Google Gears is a great idea, maybe. But how many of your common-or-garden computer users have bothered to download it, or even understand what it does? In a world where ‘Quake Live’ can run out of a browser entirely using Javascript, surely this is a bit of a handicap?
