Tweeting from space

As the reach and popularity of Twitter increases, today saw the first Tweet from space.  Astro_Mike, an astronaut on STS-125 sent a tweet earlier today saying “From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!”

Looking back through Mike’s account shows tweets about getting ready for launch, having dinner with the family and going through his final flight checks. While none of this is particularly groundbreaking, (in fact I imagine NASA’s media department are keeping a close eye on the account,) it still gives you what feels like an incredible insight into the life of someone that you would normally only hear mentioned on the news. spacebird

His 249,000 followers show I’m not the only one.

This is a far cry from the recent antics of Kanye West, who launched a hilarious tirade on his blog about people impersonating him on Twitter.  I’ll avoid posting the full profanity laden post on here, but it’s well worth a read.

Guess it’s not everyone’s cup of tea then.

Maybe some celebrities actually don’t want the general public at large prying into their everyday lives and would prefer to leave their activities unannounced. Whilst Twitter as a professional tool offers appeal in everyday updates on relevant matters, I dont see why people would want to publicise basic and boring information unless they are attention seeking and therefore unlikeable in my opinion, like most celebrities.
